Landfills are essential for managing the growing volume of waste in our expanding population. They offer a regulated and crucial solution for responsible waste disposal, preventing pollution and safeguarding public health. While promoting waste reduction and recycling, landfills remain a vital part of our waste management infrastructure, ensuring the safe containment of non-recyclable and non-compostable materials.

At Repurpose, we prioritize finding the right balance in waste diversion, reduction, and reuse. Beyond our business, we are dedicated to protecting the environment and the communities we serve. Adhering to environmental practices benefits our customers, local businesses, and communities. Our commitment to responsible waste management aims to create a sustainable future where community needs align with environmental preservation.

Safety and Compliance

Containment is at the core of our responsible waste disposal strategy. Our landfill containment systems are designed to control waste, leachate, landfill gas, rainwater, and surface water, ensuring environmental protection and compliance with regulatory standards.

Our containment systems consist of three fundamental components:

  1. Landfill Caps: The uppermost element of our containment system, landfill caps, is strategically placed on the top and side slopes once active landfilling concludes or when waste reaches its final grades within cells. Caps provide essential coverage to minimize environmental exposure.

  2. Landfill Covers: Throughout the landfill's operational life, various types of covers are employed. Daily covers are applied at the end of each day to conceal waste, while intermediate covers are utilized when an area won't receive waste or a cap for an extended period (typically two to six months). These covers play a critical role in waste containment.

  3. Liners: The foundation of our landfill containment system, liners are installed after excavating the landfill cell and prior to waste placement. We carefully select liner materials based on specific functions and performance criteria.

Our commitment to effective containment systems reflects our dedication to environmentally responsible waste management practices. With these systems in place, we ensure the protection of the environment while efficiently managing waste and adhering to regulatory requirements.

Additionally, we actively collaborate with the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation (TDEC) and the Greater Nashville Regional Council (GNRC) for Solid Waste to ensure compliance and engage in waste management planning in the region.
